New Collaborative Spotlight: Karaganda Buketov University, Kazakhstan |
IU SoE representatives visited Karaganda Buketov and Nazarbayev Universities in Kazakhstan in the last week of October, 2025. Karanganda University invites and welcomes SoE’s engagement in its work to upskill its teaching force in Higher Education and in public schools. Dean Berry’s previous engagement in Kazakhstan paved the way for the visit by GIE’s Faculty Fellow, Faridah Pawan, accompanied by Higher Education doctoral student, Arman Zhumazhanov. This visit included the Bolashak HQ whose scholars have been a constant presence at IU since 2005.

Faculty Spotlight: Curt Bonk’s Talks on AI Pedagogy and Self-Directed Learning in Asia |

Professor Curt Bonk
was invited to give talks on AI Pedagogy as well as on Self Directed Learning in multiple international locations over the past few months. In the months of June and July, Bonk shared his expertise in Thailand, Taiwan & South Korea. On August 18, 2025, Bonk gave a keynote talk at the opening session of the sixth annual Global Smart Education (GSE) Conference held at Beijing Normal University in Beijing, China that was attended by 3,000 people from 90 countries. Bonk and his research team received an Innovation Research Prize at the closing session of the GSE Conference for their development and validation of the Personal Attributes for Self-Directed AI Learning Scale. The following day (August 21), he gave an invited talk on generative AI pedagogy for Peking University and a
similar talk the day after that at the Open University of China. | | | | |

Short-term Study Abroad Opportunity: Immersive English Tutoring in Batam, Indonesia |
Spend two weeks tutoring children in conversational English on Batam Island in Indonesia this summer! Tutoring will involve students in grades K-10, learning conversational English. The hosting school will provide housing and meals. Students will also spend two or three days sightseeing and visiting an international school in Singapore.
This program requires enrollment in F203- Travel Study: Immersive English Tutoring in Indonesia.

Faculty
IU-Universität Hamburg Collaborative Grant
Seed funding for collaborative projects with high potential to lead to externally funded research, larger scale collaborations, jointly authored papers and/or common teaching activities at the undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral levels. Faculty members from IU and UHH may apply jointly for up to 8000 USD.

International Mobility
Travel for individual research or creative pursuits, including conference participation, archival research, and other short-term activities (for one-time trips, not related to an ongoing IU partnership).

International Collaboration
Visit a current or prospective partner university to strengthen or explore collaboration in teaching, research, or creative activity. Students
Ochoa-Becker Travel Grant for Graduate Students
Funding may be either for students to travel overseas on their own for academic purposes (such as teaching, learning and research) OR to support travel in association with a faculty member (such as assisting in chaperoning a group of students on SoE’s faculty-led overseas short-term studies programs).

Primary Partner Graduate Student Grant
Funding to doctorate level students interested in participating in research, creative activity, or career development projects with one of IU’s primary partner institutions.

Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme
This programme aims to support suitably qualified applicants to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship at an eligible higher education institution in Ireland for either one or two years. Among its features are:
