Students interested in changing into the School of Education are first recommended to meet with the Director of Persistence and Student Experience to understand the degree requirements.
Students can complete this interest form or contact Patrick McKamy at pmckamy@iu.edu for a major change.
If you have already met with the Director of Persistence and Student Experience, you can complete the Major Change form.
Major Change Requirements
Prior to beginning the process, it is always recommended to meet with the Director of Persistence and Student Experience by completing this form.
A student with no IU GPA (typically a first semester IU student) can enter the School of Education at any time. Students with an IU GPA need to meet one of the following options:
Option 1:
- Enrollment in:
- EDUC-G 203 Communication for Youth Serving Professional or EDUC-W 200 Using Computers in Education AND
- EDUC-F 110 Windows on Education
- An overall IU grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher (unless the candidate is in their first semester of undergraduate education).
Please note, these classes do not need to be completed. For example, a student can register for the required courses for the next semester and then complete the Major Change Form. For questions, please contact the Director of Persistence and Student Experience.
Option 2:
- Enrollment in:
- EDUC-G 203 Communication for Youth Serving Professional or EDUC-W 200 Using Computers in Education AND
- EDUC-F 110 Windows on Education
- Students may change their major to the School of Education with a GPA below 2.5 under certain circumstances. See the GPA requirements below.
GPA Requirements
The School of Education requires a cumulative GPA of 2.5 for automatic major change. If you have a cumulative GPA under a 2.5 GPA, you must meet the following GPA criteria for major change consideration:
| Credit Hours Completed | Required GPA |
| 1-18.5 | 1.75 |
| 19-36.5 | 2.1 |
| 37-45.5 | 2.2 |
| 46-60 | 2.275 |
| 60.5.+ | By appeal only, please meet with School of Education advisor |
Major Change by Appeal
Students who do not meet the major change criteria can submit a major change appeal to the School of Education at any point. Please consult with a School of Education advisor.
Note: For students completing a teacher education program which leads to a teaching license, you are requesting only to change into to the School of Education. Changing into the School of Education is separate from applying for admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP). You must meet program-specific requirements for admission to the TEP in order to receive permission to enroll in upper level block courses.
